Exploration for magnesite in the Myrtle Springs - Copley region was confined to sampling (167 samples, both of outcrop and crushed ore) and analysing 30 known magnesite occurrences held under mining lease, to determine the distribution of silica content and other deleterious properties within the magnesite conglomerate beds. Shipments of magnesite ore from selectively mined beds within the mining leases are being sent to Queensland Alumina Ltd in Gladstone for use in their alumina refinery purification processes. However, to date no effective procedure for optimising mined ore grades has been put in place, and a detailed geological mapping programme of the magnesite beds is urgently required to enable useful correlation of macroscopic and microscopic features of the magnesite ore.
