Regional drainage heavy mineral sampling, and the acquisition of part of a 2770 line km regional airborne magnetic/radiometric survey addressing potential kimberlite targets, were followed up with ground magnetic surveying at five selected aeromagnetic anomalies, local soil and gravel bulk sampling, and RC bedrock drilling during November 1985 (4 vertical holes totalling 165 m). ?Adelaidean low grade metasediments were penetrated at two of the anomalies drilled, and lamprophyric dykes, basalt, and brecciated sedimentary rocks showing metasomatic alteration were encountered at the other two adjacent anomalies. One 0.325 mm x 0.325 mm microdiamond, along with other kimberlite indicator minerals, was recovered in a gravel sample obtained from a streambed draining outcrop of a magnetic complex that includes the dipolar aeromagnetic anomalies CB12 and CB14: CRAE's subsequent drilling of this complex intersected a porphyritic lamprophyre. However, the presence of kimberlite indicator minerals in another gravel bulk sample obtained from a location up-stream of the complex implied that the lamprophyre was not the source of the microdiamond. It was noted by CRAE that the bedrock lithologies encountered by drilling at anomalies CB12 and CB14 have whole rock chemical compositions quite dissimilar from that of kimberlites, but they are quite anomalous in niobium and a range of rare earth elements. Because ~85% of the licence area is covered by secondary transported sediments, e.g. tillite, cemented gravels, drainage channel fill and duricrusts, there is a strong possibility that one or a combination of these media are the source of the kimberlite indicator minerals. Owing to this lack of certainty on provenance, CRAE decided to cease its work and surrender tenure.
