Coal exploration undertaken in an area situated 120 km west of Coober Pedy (open rotary drilling and geophysical logging of 2 holes for a total of 252.3 m) failed to disclose any coal seams, despite a previous explorer having found a 1-2 m thick seam present at depths of 45-100 m a few km to the east in this general area. It was concluded from the drillhole data available that Permian coal seam development within the now relinquished area is likely to be discontinuous and limited.
