Exploration for base metals associated with iron formations, and also for deposits of graphite or uranium, over the southern part of Eyre Peninsula west and north-west of Port Lincoln, included compilation of a Tertiary isopach and basement geology map from water well data, geochemical analysis of water well stored drill core samples, and selection of 2 target magnetic anomalies from existing regional and detailed aerial magnetic surveys. Limited ground magnetic and SP surveys, followed by drilling of 6 air cored reverse circulation holes (total 363.5 m) at the Rifle Range prospect, identified the source of that anomaly as an increased magnetite content within diopsidic marbles of probable Early Proterozoic Hutchison Group age. Elevated copper and zinc values were found in 83MURC2, and anomalous tin values were found in 83MURC1. The second anomaly, on an EWS Waterworks Reserve, was not followed up.
