The three licences now being surrendered were originally taken out by Seltrust in the mid-1970s to search for stratabound base metals and Olympic Dam type mineralisation. After Seltrust withdrew from the subsequently formed Stuart Shelf joint venture group at the end of 1982, the new operator Carpentaria and remaining JV partner Geopeko carried out barometrically controlled gravity and ground magnetic surveys over the whole JV area, and a CSAMT survey on EL 1205. Later, rotary precollar drillhole PRL24 and diamond drillhole SAR10 (to 504 m) tested a coincident magnetic / gravity anomaly at Horse Well. Low grade gold values, seen in drill cuttings from the Tregolana Shale interval 196-218 m of hole PRL24, were not substantiated by check assaying of equivalent rock samples taken from drill cores recovered by follow-up wedged-off diamond drilling performed in holes SAR10a and SAR10b, and so were probably due to contamination.
