Base metal exploration in an area lying immediately to the east of Pernatty Lagoon targeted stratiform deposits within Late Proterozoic metasediments, seeking shallowly-occurring favourable stratigraphic facies associations based on the Zambian Copperbelt model. A qualitative and quantitative interpretation of aeromagnetic data revealed a complex basement structure that appeared to be related to known mineralisation in the region, and which offered potential for finding mineralised sabkha - type beds pinching out on the flanks of basement highs. Twelve widely-spaced vertical rotary/percussion holes totalling 570 m were drilled in May 1975 in the western and southern parts of the licence area to test the prospective Whyalla Sandstone - Pandurra Formation interface, but all of the drillholes failed to penetrate to this objective, or to intersect anomalous base metals. It was concluded that any possible Mount Gunson style mineralisation existing in this portion of the Stuart Shelf would be at too great a depth to mine by economical open cut methods, and so the ground was surrendered.
