Exploration for possible heavy mineral sand marine placer deposits within Tertiary sediments on the northern margin of the Murray Basin comprised aircore drilling (28 holes, total 744 m) in the Mutooroo station area, 50 km south-east of Olary. The best heavy mineral intersection, of 3 m @ 1.12% TiO2 and 600 ppm ZrO2, from micaceous silt fluvial interbeds at 33 m depth in hole MAC5, was judged as being too fine-grained to enable economic recovery. Subsequent work on the licence was directed towards base metal exploration of basement metasediments near the margins of the Anabama Granite and Boucaut Volcanics, seeking probable Broken Hill type mineralisation. It comprised the acquisition of a 5000 line km airborne magnetic/radiometric survey during June 1990, flown along NW-SE aligned flight lines 400 m apart using a 65 m sensor elevation, followed by the conduct of many ground magnetic and TEM survey traverses, RC drilling (232 holes, total 16,208 m) and diamond drilling (2 holes, total 521 m). Anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb and some elevated Au were recorded from sampling along a north-northeast trending aeromagnetic lineament. A significant anomalous zone found south of Maldorky, where magnetite-bearing metasediments have an atypical albite-actinolite-epidote mineral assemblage, showed maximum values exceeding 2000 ppm Cu, 1% Zn and 500 ppm Pb. Follow-up diamond drilling yielded maxima of 3500 ppm Cu, 1500 ppm Zn, 200 ppm Pb and 48 ppb Au, with most of the core sample disseminated mineralisation occurring as native copper after oxidised chalcopyrite, on joint and schistosity surfaces in biotite-magnetite schists; in one instance, visible chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena fill crackle veins in hydrothermally-brecciated quartz-muscovite schist encountered over the depth interval 180-194 m in diamond drillhole MD2. A new granitoid rock unit, named the Cornwell Granite, was identified near the SW corner of the licence area from intercepts in the semi-regional aircore drilling programme conducted by Dominion, after it had been predicted by aeromagnetic data interpretation. This Delamerian intrusive body is thought to have generated the hydrothermal activity leading to local greisen development and attendant mineralisation. Contouring of drillhole top of bedrock depths have revealed a substantial pre-Murray Basin palaeodrainage system, with a major channel directed south-eastwards beneath the Maldorky area.
