Laboratory beneficiation feasibility tests have been conducted on a 250 lb bulk sample of known heavy mineral - bearing beach sands which were taken from nearshore dunes located along the northern coastline of Kangaroo Island at Nepean Bay. It was initially found that performing voltaic high tension separation of grains in the heavy mineral concentrate that had been obtained earlier by doing gravity and magnetic separation passes on the sand bulk sample, did not give a clear separation of zircon and rutile, the two prime heavy minerals sought, despite repeated attempts made at a wide range of equipment setting conditions. Furthermore, subsequent magnetic cleanup of the conductive fraction did not give a satisfactory upgrade or recovery of rutile, because of the strongly magnetic properties of the majority of rutile grains. Further testing work carried out over the ensuing few months ultimately demonstrated that it was technically possible to produce separate rutile and zircon concentrate fractions, at a high recovery of rutile and expected satisfactory recovery of zircon, by first chemically scrubbing the sand with alkali. A preliminary estimation of capital and operating costs applicable to a plant that can carry out the full beneficiation process indicated that it could be an economic proposition to construct if designed to produce mixed heavy mineral concentrate at a rate of 5000 tons or more per annum.
