Exploration for possible Precambrian hydrothermal vein style or unconformity type uranium deposits and for any other economic metalliferous minerals was carried out over several small inliers of Early Proterozoic rocks that crop out poorly through Cainozoic lateritic soils and Permian glacial cover between the Rapid Bay coastline and the Kuitpo - Nangkita area on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Following a review of previous uranium exploration work in the region, a two-stage detailed airborne radiometric survey was flown in late 1968, and the results have been presented as isoradioactivity contour maps for Bi214 (U), Bi214/Tl208 and Bi214/K40. 47 weak radiometric anomalies that were identified from close inspection of the airborne data profiles were investigated in the field by ground prospecting and grid-based scintillometer traversing at the 8 best prospects (readings taken on 400 foot - spaced lines, except for 200 foot at Winnie Royd). Apart from peak values recorded in the vicinity of mine tailings heaps at Wild Dog prospect, the highest radiation readings were 240-250 counts/sec at Tapley and Keeler prospects, over a background of 60-80 cps. The latter radiometric anomalies are attributed to weathered uranium entrapped within laterites, or to thorium-bearing pegmatoid segregations. Further evaluation of other, lesser radiometric anomalies is planned.
