A helicopter - assisted drainage geochemical reconnaissance survey was carried out over a large expanse of synclinally folded sediments in the south-central Flinders Ranges during June-July 1968, with 4 days of on-ground follow-up completed in mid-September 1968. The objective was to assess the stratabound, Mississippi Valley type base metal prospectivity of the Lower Cambrian Parachilna Formation and Wilkawillina Limestone cut by Recent stream erosive activity. A total of 1105 samples were collected for assay by AAS at Amdel. Widespread areas of alluvium derived from the Pound Quartzite were avoided when sampling. Only a few minor anomalies were detected, principally zinc to 350 ppm Zn and lead to 500 ppm Pb, related to limonitic outcrops in Parachilna Formation on the Balcanoona and Cadnia 1-mile mapsheet areas. These anomalies were discounted as being due to iron and manganese oxide scavenging processes.
