As part of a regional geochemical survey for signatures of stratiform base metal deposits, 208 stream sediment samples were collected along the eastern flank of the Mount Deception Range, over the lower part of the Late Proterozoic Bunyeroo Formation. One area anomalous in zinc was indicated north-east of Mount Deception, but check sampling of the nearby creeks did not confirm this. Hammer drilling of 2 holes (total 270 feet) was carried out over both this site and another geochemical anomaly near Puttapa Gap. The latter hole intersected zinc values of 1100-2400 ppm between 50 and 100 feet depth, in shaly sediments of the Bunyeroo Formation deposited in a reducing environment. Mineragraphic inspection of the opaque fraction in drill cuttings revealed minute grains of syngenetic sphalerite and galena associated with relatively abundant framboidal pyrite.
