This report presents the findings from the geochronological and petrological investigation of a range of lithologies sampled from across the northern Gawler Craton. This study was principally undertaken to obtain a greater distribution of age data to constrain regional geology and instruct regional mapping, given existing geochronological data across the region are sparse, and therefore the correlation of known lithological units over large areas and the identification of major structural boundaries is uncertain. Ten samples in total were recovered from several locations across the northern Gawler Craton where there is an obvious paucity of existing geochronological data: south-east of the Mount Woods Domain, the western Nawa Domain, southern Coober Pedy Ridge, and the southern Nawa Domain (including Mabel Creek Ridge). The sampled lithologies range from texturally and mineralogically variable metasedimentary rocks recording metamorphic overprints of differing grade, to meta-mafic rocks, felsic granitoids, and calc-silicate. Most lithologies were targeted for zircon and apatite U–Pb geochronology (using laser-ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass spectrometry methods LA-ICP-MS), while the U–Pb isotopic system in monazite and rutile, and the Lu–Hf isotopic system in apatite, calcite, and garnet, were also utilised depending on the mineralogy of the sample and the questions to be addressed.
