The Kitticoola - North Rhine area, which borders the Ordovician Palmer Granite intrusion, has been explored for possible economic buried gold and base metals mineralisation by carrying out limited BLEG stream sediment sampling and by taking rock chip geochemical samples from the vicinity of two abandoned copper mines. The steeply dipping main, western lode at the North Rhine copper prospect returned assay values of up to 0.87% Cu, 3.45 g/t Au and 131 g/t Ag from narrow intervals of auriferous quartz-veined fault breccias that are developed within Lower Cambrian arkoses and sandstones. Potential exists for structurally-controlled repetitions of this mineralisation in possible tensional jogs formed along the associated curvilinear fault zone, which earlier mapping had suggested may extend for at least 4 km towards the north-west. At the request of a landowner, abandoned mine tailings dumps located on his property 1 km south of Palmer [Lot 45, Section 960, Hundred of Tungkillo] were auger sampled by Aberfoyle with five x 1-metre deep holes, and the material assayed. Results suggested that a resource of 30,000 t averaging 0.4 g/t Au may exist in the main dump, and another 7000 t averaging 2.2 g/t Au in a smaller dump close to a formerly used tailings dam. This volume of material was considered by Aberfoyle to be too small for it to treat, so the JV partners decided to relinquish their EL-related rights to the tailings, leaving the landowner, Mr C. Burdett, free to negotiate with a small syndicate for their treatment.
