Exploration for possible economic carbonate sediment-hosted Carlin style hydrothermal gold and copper mineralisation in the Mount Stuart - Patawarta Gap area of the Flinders Ranges has comprised soil, rock chip and stream sediment sampling, the conduct of a ground magnetic survey, and RC drilling (7 holes, total 990 m) of geochemical targets identified on a new sampling grid that was laid out in the Nuccaleena mine area. Weak gold, arsenic and copper anomalism and strong barium (max 1.81%) anomalism were recorded associated with faults and silicified fault breccias, with silicified calcareous horizons, and with bleached zones characterised by silica-pyrite alteration. Quartz-barite-carbonite veins were also seen, forming feeders to highly silicified carbonate horizons. However, no significant gold mineralisation was noted. In the Mount Stuart, Angepena and Patawarta areas, weakly anomalous gold, copper and arsenic is associated with carbonate-quartz veining, mainly in shale or siltstone lithologies, adjacent to or within diapiric breccia intrusions into faults. The generally low and sparse gold values in these veins and the lack of vein intensity and continuity implies that they are of no economic importance. Therefore Placer decided to cease work on the tenement and surrender it.
