Following recognition of the likely young age of the sources of the Abminga area magnetic anomalies, and the discovery of a number of diamond indicator minerals in sediments to the west of the Peake and Denison Ranges, the Allandale joint venture thought that the eastern side of the Ranges might be similarly prospective for diamonds. The companies part-funded a 5500 line km, 200 m line-spaced aeromagnetic / radiometric survey (part of the SAEI E3 regional survey) of this latter area to disclose possible targets. 3 vertical RC drillholes (total 580 m) drilled on aeromagnetic anomalies of possible shallow kimberlitic / lamproitic origin, south-east of Oodnadatta, intersected only Cretaceous shale and sandstone. An additional large unexplored area of elevated magnetic field intensity, attributable to a buried Proterozoic or Archaean magnetite-rich BIF with possible Olympic Dam-type Cu-Au(-U) potential, was located 28 km north of the proven copper-gold mineralised Peake and Denison Ranges.
