A sequence of exploration programs in the Mount Painter Province, undertaken on Special Mining Leases since 1965, have been previously released. Exploration for base metals since 1974, in an area extending 20 km southwest from Arkaroola, comprised a review of previous company exploration data, detailed grid mapping of known prospects and selected geochemical anomalies, plus new gossan, soil, stream-sediment and rock-chip sampling, ground magnetic, IP and Crone EM surveys, and diamond drilling (3 holes, total 552.4 m). No economically significant base metal anomalism was detected, although locally pervasive sulphide mineralization was noted from IP profiling and associated drilling of metasomatized sediments related to buried igneous intrusions. At McLeashes prospect near Nudlamutana Hut, a zone of disseminated syngenetic sulphide with between 2% and 15% pyrite plus traces of chalcopyrite and probable sphalerite was intersected over a core length of 41 metres in the Wortupa Quartzite / Skillogalee Dolomite Transition Zone, below the level of oxidation. The best overall assay results from two holes drilled there on surface geochemical anomalies were 1350 ppm Cu, 470 ppm Pb and 0.62% Zn over a 1 metre interval.
