Previous drilling by WMC at the Kartanya prospect, 30 km west of Rudall in the central-southern Eyre Peninsula, yielded several high grade Fe intersections with up to 1% P and 140 ppm Zn. Reassaying of drillhole samples returned reduced levels of these iron ore contaminants, in the ranges 0.18-0.23% and 24-100ppm respectively, from recrystallised haematitic iron formation of the Middleback Subgroup. However, an invited expert resource assessment by Hammersley Iron Pty Ltd inferred the presence of only 8 Mt of low average Fe and high P haematite ore containing intricate intergrowths of very fine grained apatite. Subsequently, recommended prospect-defining airborne and ground magnetic surveys and a gravity survey identified a westerly dipping body, from which a 160 m diamond drillhole recovered BIF with 10-30% magnetite and average Fe and P of 23.5% and 0.24% respectively.
