Marathon Petroleum's exploration investigations of EL 871 during 1982 were aimed at a detailed follow-up of prospective horizons and geochemical targets located in 1981. Rock chip assaying of selected lithologies, in particular quartz-garnet/gahnite rocks, amphibolites and feldspathic garnet gneisses, was made in order to compare the sequence in the 'Schist Belt' areas with a similar one found in the Broken Hill area of the Willyama Inliers in NSW, with the hope of delineating areas in the northern Mount Painter Province that would be prospective for volcanogenic sulphide, Broken Hill type mineralisation.
