Uranium mineralisation was first discovered at the old Shamrock Copper Mine during a systematic search of old mine dumps by the South Australian Department of Mines in 1955. Follow-up investigations located a small high-grade uranium lode (Valley Lode) in a creek bed to the west of the Shamrock Mine. The Shamrock area was explored for uranium by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1969, as part of SML 236. An initial ground radiometric survey was followed up by testing of radiometric anomalies by costeaning, diamond drilling and blasting of pits. Exploration by MPAL, as operator for a Joint Venture Agreement with North Flinders Mines Ltd, commenced in 1980. Detailed mapping, sampling and geophysics in 1981 defined a diamond drill hole target at the Valley Prospect, which was subsequently drilled in 1982. This report summarises work to date on the Shamrock Prospect area including the Kennecott drilling, presents results of the 1982 drilling, and discusses genetic models for the mineralisation.
