Two areas (OT96-A and B) located in the South Australian sector of the onshore Otway Basin are available until 27/9/96 for applications of grant as Petroleum Exploration Licences (PELs). Both areas contain a number of undrilled prospects and leads identified from over 700 line km of regional seismic surveying. The largest known play is the Benara Prospect in OT96-A, which has a potential reserve of approximately 190 MMBBLS of recoverable oil. Target reservoirs are Early to Late Cretaceous fluvial and deltaic sandstones at depths of 1600 to 2650 metres, occurring within faulted anticlinal traps developed in a pull-apart rift basin setting characterised by early half graben subsidence succeeded by late stage growth faulting. Source rocks comprise coals and lacustrine/deltaic shales of the Early Cretaceous Eumeralla, Laira and Casterton Formations and Late Cretaceous Belfast Mudstone, which can be expected to lie within the oil/gas expulsion window between depths of 1300 to 3800 metres, depending on the prevalent local structure situation.
