Adelaidean strata in the Mount Painter-Arkaroola area were investigated for stratiform copper, initially by North Flinders Mines and later in a joint venture with Western Mining Corp. Following a study of previous exploration data in the region, a programme of geochemical validation surveying and geophysical surveys of promising anomalies was performed. Most attention was given to a discontinuous horizon, up to 12 metres thick, of malachite-stained siltstones, grits and conglomerates in the Groan Creek area. The mineralization occurs at the contact of the Blue Mine Conglomerate and Opaminda Formation, implying that disseminated copper sulphides might be present downdip. Initially the mineralized outcrop was re-mapped at 1:5000 scale and the local stratigraphic succession was measured and described from the nearby north bank of Arkaroola Creek. Based on results from a soil sampling survey conducted across the EL, 4 lines of IP surveying were carried adjacent to Groan Creek to pinpoint possible sulphide orebody drilling targets. Results of the IP work were generally inconclusive, so 3 electrosoundings were made near the centre of the IP lines to determine the depth of mineral oxidation. Here again data quality was poor, possibly due to very dry ground conditions. Diamond drilling to test the copper-bearing horizon was undertaken from atop a very steep ridge to the west of Groan Creek. Only 2 holes were completed for a total of 273.6 metres of diamond coring. The intersected mineralization appears to be a primary pyrite-chalcopyrite assemblage, with supergene alteration to chalcocite, digenite, covellite, native copper, malachite and azurite. Best assays obtained were 20.63m @ 1862 ppm Cu in hole GD1 below 17 metres depth, and 4m @ 2043 ppm Cu in hole GD2 below 135 metres depth, from an otherwise uniformly disappointing interval of deeply weathered and sparsely copper- mineralized rock. Eight other copper prospects in the Arkaroola vicinity having similar outcropping mineralization to Groan Creek were reviewed and field checked, with particular emphasis on the O'Donoghue Castle and McLeashes occurrences, but in all cases the stratiform mineralization appeared to be of limited extent, largely secondary in nature and related only to localized shearing and faulting.
