Exploration for gold and base metals in the Willouran Ranges, conducted over an area located approximately 26 km south-west of Marree, was aimed at evaluating known quartz-limonite vein stockwork - type gold mineralisation on four prospects, plus investigating the potential for stratabound precious metal mineralisation occurring at the base of the Skillogalee Dolomite in the Burra Group. Work included rock chip sampling on known prospects and bulk-cyanide-leach (BCL) stream sediment sampling, plus soil sampling. Surface sampling of the vein systems and country rocks at Douglas Gully, Rook and Warra Warra indicated that the bulk gold grade is well below 1 g/t Au, although some small copper-rich veins do contain significantly higher grades. No gold anomalism of interest was defined by the regional stream sediment sampling. Limited reconnaissance rock chip sampling carried out at the Breaden Hill copper-gold mine prospect located significant gold values, to 1.19 g/t Au, associated with crustiform veined breccias. The variable vein attitudes and the presence of matrix-supported breccias suggest that the mineralisation post-dates the principal local folding and shearing event, and is therefore different in age and type from that present at other historically worked copper deposits in the Willouran Ranges. It was inferred by the licensees that this style of mineralisation could occur as a series of vertically stacked 'manto' - type lenses within a steeply dipping pipe-like structure. The envisaged gold potential of this scenario was not followed up before the joint venture elected to surrender tenure.
