Possible Cainozoic garnet-rich heavy mineral sand placer deposits that might have been derived from erosion of Cambrian Kanmantoo Group metasediments were investigated by very shallow auger drilling (11 holes, total 19 m) and beach sand sampling performed along the western shoreline of Lake Alexandrina, between Point Sturt and Milang. Traces only of ilmenite and garnet were revealed in sediment samples recovered from the drilling. However, it was found that a subeconomic placer occurrence of garnet-rich beach sediments containing layers of pure garnet up to 4 cm thick extends for 700 m along the northern edge of Sturt Peninsula.
