In a search for economic sedimentary uranium deposits in an area located approximately 80 km south-east of Lake Frome, possible extensions to the NW-SE trending Yarramba Palaeochannel system running along the eastern side of the Benagerie Ridge basement high have been sought by the licensee. Only one previous drillhole (Sedimentary Uranium's Hole 6 drilled in SML 696) had encountered prospective Tertiary channel sands lying within the current licence extent, in the basal Murnpeowie Formation deposited within a palaeotopographic depression formed just above the Cretaceous palaeosurface. Across the licence area in general, available drillhole information has indicated that the upper part of the Tertiary sedimentary succession appears to be dominantly clay and silt, with a persistent limestone unit of variable thickness lying between 20 to 30 m below the surface. Only minor sand lenses occur in this upper part of the Tertiary sequence, and consequently EL 89 is considered to have low uranium potential, except perhaps along its eastern side. A small percussion drilling programme consisting of 3 holes each to about 150 m depth was nevertheless planned by the licensee, the intent being to look for an inferred palaeodrainage 'headwater' sand development between the sites of previous holes 6 and B1 on the southeastern side of the Benagerie Ridge, 5 km south-east of Benagerie Homestead. Other previous drillholes had penetrated unoxidised channel sands 9.5 km south-east of this location, so it was hoped that drilling a little distance to the north-west might intersect a redox front within these sands. Because the proposed drilling formed a minor part of a more comprehensive drilling programme taking in all three of Southern Venture's ELs in the region, initial drilling work was commenced in August 1974 on another of the licences. However, persistent problems with the drilling contractor's performance caused many delays, such that eventually the alloted drilling budget was exhausted before any drilling could take place on EL 89. It was decided not to seek a further extension of term on this licence, in view of its perceived marginal prospectivity.
