Exploration for possible buried roll-front or sandstone type sedimentary uranium deposits was carried out over a broad area lying northeast of Lake Frome by a South African - French joint venture. A large reconnaissance open hole rotary drilling and wireline geophysical logging programme (95 + 13 follow-up holes, including 1 early fully-cored hole; aggregate total 47,345 feet) was completed on a 4 mile regular grid spacing without encountering any economic mineralisation (minor radioactivity peaks corresponding to 40-50 ppm U3O8 equivalent were recorded in only 2 holes, D10 and F9, when compared to the regional background that ranged from 2-6 ppm U3O8 equivalent). Most of the drillholes ended in Cretaceous sediments of the Marree Subgroup. Crystalline basement was not intersected. Although a number of low-order uranium anomalies were detected, only in the area of hole D10 was there a recognisable spatial correlation between the uranium concentrations and fluvial channel sands. The drillhole grid spacing was much too wide to permit the delineation of individual Tertiary palaeochannels, but evidence of the occurrence of several channel zones in both the Eyre and Etadunna Formations was apparent. Detailed sedimentological logging of borehole samples was undertaken, to facilitate a plausible reconstruction of the floodplain history and palaeogeography. This model features a predominantly braided river system debouching into the ancient Lake Frome via a number of delta fronts which gave rise to marginal lacustrine sandbars. With time the basin system degraded, through climatic dessication and depositional slope peneplanation leading to palaeodrainage choking by silts and clay, such that the majority of river channels ceased to exist. Despite the disappointing results, it is considered that the area may still hold some potential for the discovery of economic uranium mineralisation.
