Lignite seams in three separate parts of the Moorlands Coalfield were further assessed for their potential to produce commercial grade montan wax in marketable quantities, via the drilling and sampling of three appraisal cable tool percussion/core holes with a total penetration of 277 feet 4 inches, to provide drill core samples which were distributed locally and overseas for the qualitative testing of extracted waxes by potential customers. The wax yield of the lignite was deemed to be too low, and its content of impurities too high, to make the proposition commercially interesting. Possible upgrading of the wax material to meet market specifications was not pursued.
