The radioactive Burkitt Granite batholith, which outcrops in an area extending from 10 to 30 km north-west of Iron Knob, was surveyed by CRA in 1972 with close-spaced helicopter-borne scintillometric traverses, as part of a regional exploration programme targeting primary uranium deposits. This granite intrusion, which has been dated at 1550 +/- 70 million years old by the Rb/Sr method, was proved to be anomalous in uranium by follow-up rock chip and drainage sampling, with an average uranium content of 25 ppm U (plus 77 ppm Th), which is 5 times more than that of normal granite. The notable variation in uranium content between fresh and weathered granite samples, besides the much lower uranium values (2-5 ppm U) recorded in 44 drainage samples taken in creekbeds surrounding the granite outcrops, all pointed to a history of ready leaching of uranium within the drainage system and the strong possibility of formation nearby of secondary occurrences of uranium mineralisation. However, it was stated at the time that this scenario would be unable to be investigated by CRA because of its prevailing exploration framework.
