Gold and base metal exploration, based on an interpretation of SAEI airborne geophysical data for an area north-west of Naracoorte, comprised the acquisition of ground magnetic surveys, calcrete geochemical sampling, and exploratory rotary mud/diamond drilling done during January 1997 (1 vertical hole, total 150 m, including 50.9 m of BQ coring). Maximum gold values of only 11 ppb Au were returned from the surface sampling, and base metal assay values were insignificant. Within the drillhole, metamorphic basement rocks were penetrated at 112 m depth. Eleven samples of the drill core were later assayed, but also failed to show significant results. It was concluded that the target anomaly is caused by magnetic mineral bands present within Precambrian basement schist.
