SA Government - managed exploration of two magnetically anomalous areas located approximately 30 km east and north-east of Burra, which were thought to be underlain by porphyritic granite intrusions analogous to the Cu-Mo mineralised Bendigo Granite of the south-western Nackara Arc, has consisted of the conduct of preliminary IP and resistivity surveys for estimating the depth of overburden, and a programme of shallow pattern drilling of the target magnetic anomalies on a 1.5 km square grid system. The dimensions of this grid were determined from a statistical study of the Anabama Hill and Bendigo mineralised areas. 3 vertical rotary mud holes with a total penetration of 418.1 m were completed at South Dam prospect during January-February 1973, and 26 vertical air percussion holes for 1389.75 m were completed at Kia Ora prospect during February-March 1973. Only weakly anomalous copper and zinc were disclosed at the South Dam intrusion, which lies under at least 100 m thickness of cover, whereas at the somewhat larger and shallower Kia Ora intrusion, slightly more encouraging copper values (elevated to 100 ppm Cu over a 24 m depth interval) were obtained from several adjacent drillholes penetrating weathered to partly weathered granite at depths of between 10 m and 60 m.
