Examination of an historically worked occurrence of stratiform base metal mineralisation near Balcanoona in the central Flinders Ranges, 50 miles east of Copley, has involved intensive geochemical sampling of abandoned mine adits, old dumps, surrounding soils and stream beds, plus geological mapping, geophysical surveying and limited inclined diamond drilling (3 holes, total penetration 2316 feet). Outcropping lodes of copper ore and lead-zinc ore are associated with a north-plunging broad anticline in Lower Cambrian and Upper Proterozoic sediments, which have been metamorphosed to lower greenschist grade. Visible oxide copper minerals (malachite and azurite) occur in certain beds within the Pound Quartzite, more predominantly in the overlying silty sandstones of the Parachilna Formation, and to a more limited extent in the overlying ferruginized and gossanous Wilkawillina Limestone, which formation also contains trace pyrite and chalcopyrite in addition to smithsonite and jarosite-goethite. Outcrops of these stratigraphic units are mineralised sporadically, but consistently, for about 5.5 miles along strike, with lode widths of up to 50 feet. Samples typically contain an average of 1% Cu, with up to 0.4% Zn and 0.1% Pb also present within the Cambrian limestones. Intense leaching appears to have taken place to depths of several hundred feet, while preferential enrichment of cobalt, mercury and yttrium is evident within the Parachilna Formation. Further reconnaissance mapping and sampling is planned to identify possible other occurrences of weathered ore, and drilling will be continued in an effort to locate the source of the abundant secondary mineralisation.
