Flinders Island, located in the offshore Great Australian Bight 35 km west-southwest of Elliston, was taken under mineral exploration licence to investigate whether possible gold mineralisation occurs there associated with late stage faulting of Hiltaba Suite granites, and also to seek any extensions to broad, kimberlitic affinity surface sediment geochemical anomalies found in the Elliston area. An aerial reconnaissance of the island's geomorphology showed little evidence of faulting, and the conduct of an orientation calcrete geochemical sampling programme (24 samples assayed), although compromised by the existence of at least two phases of Recent calcrete development, returned no anomalous gold or other trace metal values. Processing of 18 heavy mineral loam samples to allow inspection of the concentrates for diamonds or kimberlite indicators did not proceed, following the receipt of negative such results from the sampling of stored material recovered from drillholes within kimberlite intrusions previously discovered by Stockdale Exploration near Elliston (the grain size fraction examined was 0.3 mm to 1 mm). Consequently, the diamond potential of Flinders Island presently remains unknown.
