Tailings remaining after the crushing/acidic leach treatment of uranium-bearing davidite ore from the Radium Hill mine, which are held in six clay-lined containment ponds ('dams') at the now disused Port Pirie ore treatment plant, have been studied to determine whether valuable rare earth elements present in them can be recovered in sufficient quantity and then marketed successfully. The necessary conditions for achieving satisfactory extraction of scandium, yttrium and lanthanides were determined.
