Remnant Triassic sediments within the 3.5 square mile extent intramontane Springfield Basin, 8 miles south of Hawker, were considered possibly to have subsurface environments favourable for the deposition of roll-front type sedimentary uranium deposits. Initially, radioactivity surveys were undertaken of the target sequence. 6000 feet of stored drillhole samples from previous SA Department of Mines coal exploration boring were scanned with a scintillometer, but yielded mainly background radioactivity, plus a few readings to twice background. Field traverses with a scintillometer revealed minor radiation to 2.5 times background in the north-west of the basin, over a fresh, unleached portion of a thin basal sand unit. Two rotary holes totalling 354 feet were then drilled to basement and gamma ray logged, to evaluate this target section downdip of the anomalous outcrops. However, the drilling failed to intersect either radioactive sediments or a well-developed porous sequence suitable for uranium ore formation, so the prospectivity of the licence area was severely downgraded.
