Following the partial relinquishment of 481 square km of EL 859 on 30/3/1983, exploration continued for stratiform Pb-Zn within the Carpentarian Tarcoola Beds within an east-west trending trough, or half-graben, seen on magnetics in the Wilgena Hill area. One percussion stratigraphic hole, WPD3, was drilled to 366 m total depth near the eastern boundary of EL 859 during May 1983, to test strata deposited near the southern edge of the half-graben, and it was terminated in a basic intrusion. This hole encountered mainly carbonaceous, variably tuffaceous, dolomitic siltstones and shales, with various intercalated dacitic and evaporitic layers, besides passing through more major altered basic intrusive units at both top and bottom of the drilled sequence. The stratigraphic section penetrated has been correlated with other Aberfoyle stratigraphic drilling results from the adjoining EL 1055 to the east, on the basis of petrological characteristics. Only minor geochemical anomalies of P, Mn and Zn were seen, which are not indicative of the mineralisation model sought. Further work on the licence has been held in abeyance while regional exploration strategies are reviewed.
