Ongoing diamond exploration by Stockdale over the PORT AUGUSTA 1:250,000 mapsheet area has concentrated on country to the east and south-east of Lake Gilles, where some microdiamonds and kimberlitic indicator minerals were discovered during the period 1973-1976. During the current licence period, about 1800 stream and loam samples were collected for kimberlite indicator mineral analysis, and detailed geological mapping was carried out in the area surrounding Gilles Downs Homestead. Follow-up ground magnetic surveys over the locations of regolith mineralogic and photointerpreted geomorphic structural anomalies were used to site 37 RAB drillholes totalling 1280 m. No kimberlitic rocks were identified. About 650 of the surficial sediment samples were analysed for uranium, and a ground spectrometric survey was carried out of shoreline gypsum dunes and known uraniferous granite outcrops near the north-eastern end of Lake Gilles, and in the vicinity of Polygonum Swamp Dam. The radiometric anomalism seen appears to be only of academic interest, but may be assessed further.
