Exploration for possible economic uranium deposits within the Carpentarian Tarcoola Beds near Tarcoola comprised the flying of a 2500 line km airborne gamma ray spectrometer and magnetometer survey in December 1975 (using 400 m spaced north-south flight lines with a 90 m mean terrain clearance), then on ground follow-up of a few uranium anomalies selected from amongst 69 identified radiometric anomalies, the majority of which were found to lie within salt lakes. The three anomalies inspected were seen to originate either in outcrops of granite, which gave scintillometer readings of up to 400 counts per second, or in nearby saltpan gypsiferous sediments where it was thought that radium derived from the granite was substituting for calcium in the evaporite crystals, giving radiation peaks of up to 250 cpm. None of the anomalies visited were considered to reflect, either directly or indirectly, the presence of any uranium mineralisation, and it was decided to abandon further work.
