Exploration of the Tarcoola Gold Field by Aberfoyle Resources began in mid-1984, following a partial relinquishment of other ground at licence renewal, when some promising gold assay values were detected from rock and mine dump sampling. Geological mapping, air photo interpretation and photogrammetry, plus ground magnetic and IP surveys, were followed by RAB drilling (21 holes, total 1127 m) which detected sub-economic gold in altered granite and basic intrusive bodies (best grades being 3 m @ 4.53 g/t Au) and in fractured pyritic arkose (best grade 7.5 m @ 2.73 g/t Au). Subsequent exploration comprised an airborne magnetic/radiometric survey of the greater goldfield area, and further rock chip, mine dump and BCL soil sampling. A number of IP anomalies were outlined, and several significant gold values were reported from backhoe trenching. Drilling of an additional 421 RC holes (total 12,272 m) and 12 diamond holes (total 1000 m) returned further significant gold values from the Perseverance and Last Resource prospects, 3 km west of Tarcoola. Ground magnetic survey results from lines laid out over the Mulgathing gold-in-soil geochemical anomaly, located 12 km west-southwest of Tarcoola, suggested a granitoid source for the gold, but subsequent BCL soil, stream sediment and trench sampling to obtain detailed geochemical results in this area yielded gold values which were disappointing. Indicated mineral resources for the combined Perseverance / Last Resource prospect areas were calculated in December 1990 using an economic cut-off grade of 1 g/t Au. An in-situ resource of 137 000 tonnes @ 4.2 g/t Au included a mineable 46 000 tonnes @ 5.3 g/t Au. Exploration of the Tarcoola region has remained on-going since 1990 under different tenure.
