Exploratory drilling to search for heavy mineral sands, performed over an area extending to 160 km north and north-west of Renmark, has targeted marginal marine placer deposits of detrital rutile, ilmenite and zircon in potential Loxton - Parilla Sand beach facies strandlines which were identified from air photo interpretation, digital terrain modelling, and the flying and interpretation of data from a low-level aeromagnetic survey. Within the now relinquished three licence portions that collectively amount to 34% of the originally granted ground, exploratory drilling undertaken during April 1999, of 16 vertical open RC/aircore stratigraphic drillholes totalling 393 m, failed to find any Tertiary heavy mineral sands, but intersected thick intervals of Quaternary Pooraka Formation clay containing some thin lenses of fluvial detrital iron oxide.
