An airborne magnetic survey acquired by the grant licensee over the Lameroo district during August 1997 generated a number of shallow-source anomalies which suggested that there was fair potential for discovering buried Tertiary palaeocoastal strandline heavy mineral sand (HMS) placer accumulations within the Tertiary Loxton-Parilla Sands. The survey coverage was 9446 line km flown along NE-SW lines spaced 400 m apart, using a 20 m sensor mean terrain clearance. A total of 812 shallow vertical exploratory aircore holes (total penetration 29,431 m) were drilled over most of the 84 defined magnetic targets, and for stratigraphic mapping purposes. Drilling was done along traverses aligned perpendicular to the interpreted direction of the buried strandlines, with holes generally spaced 70 m apart, closing in to 35 m apart if HMS mineralisation was detected. Drill cuttings samples were collected at 1.5 m depth intervals until 14/5/1998 (i.e. in holes LA0001 to LA0538), after which samples were taken at 2-metre depth intervals in the remaining 274 holes. Demonstrated drill depths to reach the target sand formation are now regarded as excessive over the eastern half of the search area. General grades of mineralisation above the >0.3% HM cut-off are also considered to be too low for economic feasibility, as are the rutile and zircon proportions within the heavy mineral assemblages analysed. The highest HMS grade encountered was ~6.8%, typically dominated by trash and low value heavy minerals.
