Exploration for lacustrine evaporites and for detrital heavy minerals on and near the shores of Lake Alexandrina, south of Milang, had previously located minor deposits of garnet sands along a 700 m stretch of beach on the northern shore of Sturt Peninsula, immediately west of Point Sturt. Samples of the garnet-rich sand were collected and submitted to various industrial mineral marketing companies for their appraisal, but no commercial interest could be aroused in this discovery. Samples of gypsum and carbonate-rich sediments were collected and assayed, but no significant results were returned.
