Ongoing evaluation work undertaken by Austminex at the Mount Gunson copper deposit has included geological mapping, rock rippability testing by bulldozer, the conduct of IP surveys, a further campaign of infill and exploratory drilling (726 holes totalling 41,629 m), and laboratory testing of the ore to determine its amenability to concentration and beneficiation. Drilling of biogeochemical anomalies (215 holes totalling 10,237 m) gave no significant results. Three economically significant copper orebodies were thereby delineated (Main Open Cut, Lagoon and Gunyot) which are assessed to contain, within 60 m depth below the surface, a total mineable ore reserve of 2 to 3 million short tons of at least 1% Cu, present in about equal proportions of carbonate to sulphide mineralisation. Associated with the copper sulphides, significant silver values are present (about 0.5 ozs Ag / short ton). A mineralogical study was commissioned from a CSIRO consultant, who found that two distinct types of sulphide deposits could be recognised. One type appears to have been deposited syngenetic with quartzite, and may therefore permit the occurrence of similar sulphides at various positions within it, elsewhere than at the sampled orebodies. The other type appears to have formed by deposition, below the water table, of copper sulphide from cupriferous groundwater, probably relatively recently, and it is thus expected that the present topography could provide a guide to areas of appropriate drainage where such groundwater might have accumulated in suitably stagnant sumps.
