This technical report by consultants to the Mineral Claim lessees examines the potential for mining a vast seed gypsum deposit located adjacent to Sceale Bay, about 14 km south of Streaky Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The deposit, which covers Lake Purdilla and adjacent dunes, has been the subject of sporadic yet ultimately very comprehensive geological, mining and metallurgical investigations conducted over a period of more than 30 years. It represents potentially the largest reserve of high quality gypsum in Australia still awaiting development, with estimated ore reserves of around 60 million tonnes grading 88% or more mineral gypsum. If fully developed, it is envisaged that the Sceale Bay project would be able to export about 1.5 million tonnes annually of gypsum, depending on markets for the raw ore and on the realisation of plans for developing beneficiation and manufacturing processes at the minesite which would add value to the raw gypsum, principally in the form of building materials. In addition, there is considerable scope locally for mining a range of other industrial minerals including kaolin, salt and lime sands. Any mine would have access to Sceale Bay as the site for export of ore via a proposed new mooring facility, which could accommodate bulk carriers of up to 80,000 metric tonnes deadweight.
