Ground magnetic surveys were carried out 100 km west - northwest of Ceduna, over an area of masking Tertiary and Cainozoic cover underlain by a basement of Mulgathing Complex and syntectonic Lincoln Complex and Hiltaba Suite granitoids, to recover selected aeromagnetic anomalies in areas of stratigraphic and structural interest. Drilling of resultant confirmed anomalies (94 aircore holes totalling 4233 m, that included two diamond cored tails, totalling 60 m, cut in holes BK087 and BK088) yielded elevated nickel and chromium values (max. 0.60% Ni and 0.65% Cr respectively) at several localities in weathered ultramafic basement rocks. Petrographic work identified supergene millerite in silicified serpentinite. Calcrete sampling returned anomalous Au, Pb and Mo associated with shear zones. Elevated Cu, Co, Ni, Zn and As were also detected, but it was suspected that the degree of supergene metal anomalism evident has been suppressed by the effect on groundwater circulation of impervious intervals within the Bridgewater Formation. No calcrete sampling was carried out to investigate specifically the intra-regolith geochemical dispersion signature of the discovered chromium and nickel - rich ultramafic intercepts.
