In a search for possible buried sedimentary uranium mineralisation which may have been precipitated adjacent to the northern margin of the Murray Basin in SA, following long term palaeodrainage transport of the dissolved weathering products of primary uraniferous rocks outcropping in the Radium Hill area, a programme of open hole rotary mud drilling was undertaken south of Mutooroo Homestead. Anomalous radioactivity was encountered in sediments close to the Anabama Fault Zone, which structure seems to have exerted a localising influence on the types of sedimentary facies deemed favourable for hosting sandstone-type uranium mineralisation. The results of the initial drilling of 63 holes (total 7335.7 m) and of coring 12.6 m of uraniferous clays and lignitic shale in 1 hole (MT23C with >140 ppm U) were sufficiently encouraging to prompt a second phase of closer-spaced drilling (46 holes totalling 5062 m) located along the Anabama Fault and in a suspected north-west trending palaeochannel. However, the results of this work seem to indicate that the geochemical conditions for the accumulation of uranium ore in economic amounts do not appear to be present. Nevertheless, further investigative work is still warranted if it could be accomplished under different politico-economic circumstances.
