Water well monitoring data from wells located on Aboriginal lands (Pitjantjatjara, Yalata and Nepabunna) are summarised for the period October 2000 to April 2001. Equipment failure was still high, with faults recorded at 18 wells, particularly of the 2100P standing water level measurement units. These units are progressively being replaced with a modified design that should reduce failure frequency. In spite of the fault-caused interruptions, a lot of informative well data was gathered, and the water supply sustainability picture at each community is becoming clearer. Water levels at Amata are still rising, but it is uncertain whether this rise is a result of recent recharge events or stems from the rain in February 2000. In most communities their levels of well pumping and/or drainage are not lowering the aquifer water levels significantly. Indulkana, though, stands out as a community that relies on just two wells for 94% of its water supply; wells which have an indicated life, on current data, of only 3-6 years. However, well monitoring data from there is only available for the past 18 months, and a close watch on supply loss indications should suffice at the moment. Nepabunna community water supplies are also of questionable sustainability, but the data is inconclusive.
