Exploration for possible buried Tertiary heavy mineral sands occurrences consisted of an interpretation of remote sensing data, followed by the conduct of two reverse circulation aircore drilling programmes (28 holes, total 892.5 m). The first programme of 8 holes was directed towards lithofacies mapping, and it intersected Late Pleistocene Pooraka Formation to 20-40 m depth. It also identified therein a thin and shallow mineralised unit containing anomalous amounts of coarse zircon. The second programme targeted an interpreted Pliocene strandline package in the area of anomalous zircon. However, the 20 drillholes involved intersected only alluvial sheetwash sediments. Heavy mineral grades were generally low, with a high slimes content.
