Exploration targetted Roxby Downs style and Ernest Henry style copper-gold mineralisation in an area of intensely magnetic, concealed Proterozoic metasedimentary and intrusive igneous basement terrain, characterised by complex regional geophysical anomalies associated with NW-orientated structural trends that are partly located under shallow Spencer Gulf waters west of Port Broughton. Following an evaluation of the results of earlier onshore drilling done in the area by Uranerz, detailed aeromagnetic and ground gravity surveys were carried out to define a large coincident magnetic/gravity anomaly which extends mainly offshore. Two partly cored holes were completed to investigate the anomaly, one hole being located on the coastline and the other 3 km offshore (total 310 m rotary mud pre-collar, 661 m core). Further detailed ground magnetic and gravity surveys allowed refined targetting of the area for magnetic peak, magnetic depletion and gravity anomalies. Several of those seen onshore were tested by 14 partly cored holes (1722 m rotary mud pre-collar, 1733 m core), but failed to locate any significant Cu-mineralised haematite-rich or sulphide-rich systems. Four holes were then drilled offshore (677 m rotary mud pre-collar, 846 m core), two of which identified Cu-Au-base metal mineralisation associated with K-feldspar alteration and magnetite-haematite vein systems developed in basement schists, gneisses and syenite adjacent to a regional scale, discordant structure. However, the relatively inaccessible location of this mineralisation and associated high exploration costs precluded further work offshore. Attention returned to working onshore in the vicinity of geochemically anomalous earlier holes, with the completion of a final three partly cored holes (989.5 m), each of which intersected only minor mineralisation.
