Possible potash and halite resources in evaporite - rich sediment sequences of the Tallaringa Trough, lying at depths that might be suitable for solution mining, were the initial targets of exploration in the Wilkinson Lakes area. Following a detailed re-examination of the Wilkinson 1 core, and interpretation of aeromagnetic data, a deep rotary mud/diamond drillhole was completed in April 2000 (Piglet 1, TD 688 m), 6 km north-west of Wilkinson 1, seeking a thicker salt succession further out into the interpreted depositional palaeobasin. The hole did not locate economic accumulations of evaporites. Attention then turned to gold and base metal prospects in the southern parts of the licence area, where it was thought that the top of Archaean basement might occur at a reasonably shallow depth. Surface calcrete geochemical sampling done on 800 m centres located several areas anomalous in gold, but infill sampling did not significantly enhance the anomalies. Base metal values were also of low order.
