Exploration to search for metasomatic talc bodies locally developed within sheared and brecciated dolomitic marbles of the Neoproterozoic Balcanoona Formation near Mount Fitton, 120 km north-east of Leigh Creek, has mainly consisted of surface geological and structural mapping studies carried out by a consultant during the second year of extended licence tenure. Very little field work was possible during the first licence year owing to the extraordinarily heavy rains (totalling approximately 35 inches) which fell over the period October 1973-June 1974, and which caused considerable disruption and damage to the existing Steetley talc mining operations, thus distracting attention from performing the exploration programme.
