Continuing prospect exploration work at the Beltana zinc orebody discovery has consisted of detailed geological mapping at 1:4 800 scale, rock chip sampling of outcropping Adelaidean and Cambrian sediments, field investigation of microgravity anomalies for possible smaller willemite occurrences, and economic evaluation, by trenching and channel sampling, of minor Pb-Zn sulphide barite occurrences noted within the Ajax Limestone surrounding the main orebody. An initial interpretation of the possible structural evolution of the Beltana area was advanced, based on geological observations and structural and stratigraphic sections prepared from earlier drilling results. Within the mining lease away from this area, orientation stream sediment sampling was undertaken to determine the geochemical dispersion characteristics of known outcropping Pb-Zn mineralisation in the Bunyeroo Formation, Uratanna Shale and Ajax Limestone. The few notable anomalies were found to run parallel to local thrust faults, and to peak in the vicinity of minor cross faults. Mineragraphical studies of ferruginous material taken from the capping of the main Beltana orebody did not reveal affinities to postulated gossans that might have resulted from alteration of in situ sulphides.
